why i love new york summers part III
the heat wave.
I know its hard to find something to love in 95 degree weather that feels like 100 and makes everything stick to your skin. Yes, I’m smelly, sticky, sweaty, uncomfortable and at times bordering on miserable, especially during the times when I didn’t have ac, but there really is something about the height of a hot NYC summer that I’ve always found wonderful. I suppose there are a few reasons…
- finding solutions to beat the heat: Five hours in the Bistro playing cards, marathon movie watching at the local movie theater, ice cold beer on the stoop, sleeping on rooftops (urban camping), hanging at a friend’s house with AC all afternoon shooting the breeze. They’re all things you wouldn’t normally do if you were comfortable but can become incredibly enjoyable with the right company.
- going to work is a little more enjoyable: no matter if you love or hate your job, unless you’re one of the lucky people that have central air (doubtlessly you also live in Manhattan) your job is cooler than your apartment.
- boozing it up: during the summer drinking all the time is just a little more socially acceptable. So you sat on the stoop after work and had a few drinks, of course. Why not? The apartment is too hot anyway. Went to the baseball game and drank seven over priced beers, its a baseball park and thats the tradition. Found an outdoor beer garden and chatted the evening away, what else do you do? Got to take advantage of the weather.
- text messaged a friend saturday night: There is something about sitting in my under clothes beneath two fans smoking a cig that reminds me why I love New York. It shouldn’t feel that good, but it does. Maybe I’ve watched too many movies.
- the music: I know new york isn’t the only place with summer songs, but they just fit so much better into the fabric of summer in the city. Plus this is my list. Make your own.
- its sexy: Its hot, too hot seemingly to get it on. But seriously, there is something about the heat that just makes me think of getting busy. I asked my girlfriend and she agreed, temperatures rise, the clothes start coming off. All the girls are glistening in their various states of undress. Extreme weather always incites a little loveage.
And with that I’ll close to R. Kelly’s new song: Body Body
